3 Common Iftar Mistakes to Avoid in Ramadan
They may be harming your spirituality...
The Simplicity of Our Prophet (PBUH) During Ramadan
Common Mistakes to Avoid During Iftar
Assalamu Alaikum Brothers and Sisters,
Ramadan is a month of spiritual fulfillment, but sadly, most of us consider it a month of stomach fulfillment.
Our Prophet (PBUH) used to break his fast with just dates and water, as it’s narrated about him in one hadith:
"The Messenger of Allah would break the fast with fresh dates before performing Salat. If there were no fresh dates then (he would break the fast) with dried dates, and if there were no dried dates then he would take a few sips of water."
This was his level of simplicity, but nowadays, if we look at our lifestyles, we usually don’t follow the Sunnah as we should.
Our Iftar and Suhoor tables are filled with many (unhealthy) food items, potentially harming our health, and making it difficult for us to perform worship with full enthusiasm.
We are not here to tell you just eat dates and water for Iftar (although it's great if you can do it). We recommend to strive for balance and moderation. Below we describe how.

Three Common Iftar Mistakes to Avoid
1. Never Eat Full Stomach
We know you have been hungry and thirsty for hours, but that doesn't mean you should stuff yourself with whatever you find on the table.
In a Hadith, Prophet (PBUH) commanded the believers to fill only 1/3 of their stomach with food.
‘A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls to keep his spine straight. But if he must (fill it), then one third of food, one third for drink and one third for air.’”
But how do you avoid eating full stomach?
One effective method is to eat a few bites, and then pray Maghrib prayer immediately.
Leaving some space in your stomach will also help you focus better during Taraweeh. When the stomach is full, it is difficult for the brain to maintain focus.
2. Avoid or Limit These Foods
Fried Foods: These include Samosa, Fries, Rolls, etc.; they are high in sodium and fats and can cause tiredness during the fasting period.
Sugary Items: They are high in calories but low in nutritional values, which can make you weaker throughout Ramadan.
Caffeinated drinks or food: Caffeine is a diuretic that moves fluids and salts out of the body, and will make fasting more challenging.
Most people consume these foods during Ramadan. Indeed, they taste good, but they are not good for your health.
The best way to avoid eating such foods is to avoid cooking them.
Even if you desire to eat some fried items, go ahead and cook them, but in less quantity, so that you don’t stuff yourself with them.
3. Don’t Fill up Your Stomach With Liquids
The urge to drink water is natural, and it's necessary to keep it in control. Only fill you stomach with 1/3 liquids.
The first ten days of Ramadan have already passed. However, plenty of time is remaining to achieve your goals.
