  • Why Follow Sunnah When Fard is Enough?

Assalamu Alikum Brothers & Sisters,

We all know that the life of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH is a role model for us, as the Quran says:

لَقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِىۡ رَسُوۡلِ اللّٰهِ اُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِّمَنۡ كَانَ يَرۡجُوا اللّٰهَ وَالۡيَوۡمَ الۡاٰخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللّٰهَ كَثِيۡرًا ؕ٢

Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often.

But nowadays, we are not following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH as much as we should.

The major difference between the Sahaba and us is that we leave the Sunnah by thinking it is not Fard (obligatory), while the Sahaba performed the Sunnahs out of love for Prophet Muhammad PBUH.

Following the Sunnah is a way for us Muslims to get closer to Allah SWT and seek his blessings, and it is also a great way to protect ourselves from going astray, as Prophet Muhammad PBUH said.

"As long as you hold fast to two things which I have left among you, you will not go astray: God's Book and His messenger's sunnah."

3 Forgotten Sunnahs Of the Prophet PBUH

1. Miswak

Prophet Muhammad PBUH used miswak several times a day; he would use it before each prayer, and he used miswak whenever he woke up for Tahajjud Prayer.

Narrated Hudhaifa

“Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) got up at night, he used to clean his mouth with Siwak. “

Aisha R.A. narrates that when Prophet Muhammad PBUH was about to die, he used miswak before it. Sahih al-Bukhari 4449

Prophet Muhammad PBUH loved miswak so much that he said,

"If it were not that it would be difficult on my nation, then I would have ordered them to use the Siwak for each prayer."

This Hadith is a clear evidence that using miswak was such a dear act to our Prophet Muhammad PBUH, and we all should perform it with great zeal.

Besides Miswak being one of the most emphasized sunnah, it also benefits our oral health.

2. Saying Salam to Strangers

Prophet Muhammad PBUH said:

"…Should I not direct you to a thing which, if you do, will foster love amongst you: (i. e.) give currency to (the practice of paying salutation to one another by saying) as-salamu alaikum.

Sadly, these days, we mostly say salam to those who we know. When a Sahabi asked the Prophet Muhammad PBUH about the best Islamic traits then he replied:

"Feed the people, and greet those whom you know and those whom you do not know."

This is something that we should start doing since it establishes and increases our connections with people we don’t know, and is also part of following the Sunnah.

3. Istikhara Prayer

Whenever Prophet Muhammad PBUH faced a decisive matter, he would perform the Istikhara prayer. By performing this prayer, a believer shows his submission to Allah SWT by affirming that all the authority belongs to Him, and He is the best decision-maker.

So, the next time you face a difficult decision, follow the Sunnah by performing the Istikhara prayer properly. If you don't know how to do it, you may visit our article here.
